What to Wear with B&W

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

When planning this ensemble, my first instinct was to style this printed black and white Vera Bradley scarf with head-to-toe black. In the heat of summer, all-white would be striking. Alas, I opted for varying shades of gray to add dimension.

The scarf is 100% rayon has charming radial motifs made of hearts, flowers, and teardrops. Its texture is smooth and cool-to-the-touch, with frayed threads on the ends. I can see myself wearing it comfortably in any season.

I've styled the scarf with a thrifted gray Rag & Bone duster that I altered (for my fellow dressmakers: sloped shoulder adjustment, sway back tuck). I drafted and sewed the cotton-spandex denim pencil skirt based on this Palmer/Pletsch sloper pattern.

For a higher neckline, I'm wearing the pale gray silk blouse backwards--a trick I learned years ago from my good friend Giselle.

I fashioned the drop earrings with gold posts and pearl teardrops. The multi-strand pearl necklace is from my maternal grandmother, and I shortened it a few inches to hug crew necklines.
