The New Rules of Volumizing

Scarf: The Scarf Bar / Crystal earrings: Amazon / Top: Amazon Essentials, XS-6X

Chiffon dinner scrunchie: Kitsch
Volume is what makes headscarves and berets flattering.
Over the years, many interesting contraptions have been invented for this purpose.
Most are tight, heavy, and hot.
My new approach: they must be lightweight and breathable. No more squeezing my head.
Keep scrolling for 4 innovative, light-as-air accessories to add flattering shape. You'll find a quick video demo for each one.
1. A cotton hat liner

Hat liner: Hats, Scarves, & More / Velvet grip headband: Amazon / Earrings: Etsy
/ Necklace: DIY with these beads
What a clever idea!
This hat liner is made of lightweight cotton, with a smooth jersey lining. It's made by headwear brand Hats Scarves & More, and comes in two sizes.
My head measures 22.5" around my hairline, including ears. I ordered a size medium and it's perfect.
The front edge has some stretch for a comfortably snug fit. I definitely appreciate the cut-out at the center top for keeping cool!

2. XL scrunchies
I've been playing around with three different oversized scrunchies (literally). Keep reading to discover what's worked best!

Scrunchie: The Wrap Life / Earrings: Etsy
This organza scrunchie is from headwear line The Wrap Life. I discovered the brand on the Target website.
This scrunchie's outer edges are rolled and stitched, which creates structure. I've been safety-pinning it on top of a layering scarf, as pictured above. It works wonders!
I've also been positioning the scrunchie underneath the layering scarf, as pictured below. I've found this method creates the softest shape underneath lightweight scarves.

Next up is another XL scrunchie from the same brand. This one is made of satin.

Scrunchie: The Wrap Life / Cotton undercap: Amazon / Earrings: Amazon / Necklace: DIY, similar here on Etsy
It is generously sized!
I've pinned it to a cotton jersey undercap to keep it in place.
This satin scrunchie is a bit heavier than the previous organza one. However, its soft shape wont create visible edges underneath a thin scarf.
The lovely results...
The last scrunchie is from hair accessories brand Kitsch. Known as a "chiffon dinner scrunchie," it's smaller and lighter than the previous two.
When styling it, I first fold a square scarf from The Scarf Bar diagonally. I then then safety pin the scrunchie to only one scarf layer.

The effect is soft, lightweight, and elegant. This technique is a game changer.
3. Jersey cap with long tails
What in the world is a 'jersey cap with long tails,' you ask? Click the 20-second tutorial below!
This undercap is made of a lightweight rayon jersey, with two long chiffon tails.
It comes in dozens of color combos and prints. The solid black, solid brown, and printed beige are especially versatile.
I love using the cap's tails to create a faux hair bun.

4. An oversized satin pin
This satin flower brooch adds lovely, lightweight fullness. It has both a pin mechanism and hair clip attached to the back.
The brooch comes in 28 striking colors. The gold, wine red, taupe, and midnight navy are especially beautiful. It was hard to pick just one!
For formal events, I plan to position the flower on the lapel of a stretch velvet jacket.
In the video and photos, I've pinned the flower to a nylon stocking cap. I then tied a cotton-silk ombre scarf on top.
The effect is soft, full, and flattering.
May all of your scarves and hats bring you joy.
